The Center for Disease Control says that an infection with the hantavirus can lead to hantavirus disease in people. “New World” hantavirus is termed for hantaviruses in America and this may cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). The other set of hantaviruses are termed as “Old World” hantaviruses which are mainly found in Asia and Europe and it is said to cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).
Currently there is no vaccine available for this infection. The symptoms of this virus include red eyes, fever, dizziness, shortness of breath and nausea. It is a contagious disease that can be transmitted via air or direct contact. The mortality rate of hantavirus ranges from 5% to 36%.
