On Monday, the official website of EPFO appeared to be down, a few days after the government declared the Pandemic Advance Relief Measures amid the national lockdown due to coronavirus outbreak. The Ministry of Labor and Employment declared that the government will be amending regulations to enable the workers who are enrolled under the scheme to withdraw 75% of the accumulated provident fund or three months basic salary, whichever may be lower. This announcement was made by the Ministry on March 28th.
This measure was a part of the Rs 1.70 lakh crore economic package, which was introduced by the Finance Ministry to remove the economic distress due to the Covid-19 national lockdown. The new measure will aid all the workers enrolled under the EPFO scheme, who are presently facing a challenging situation to sustain their livelihood due to the lockdown.
Even though banks are excluded from the lockdown, majority of the workers are looking forward to avail the services of EPFO via online facilities to make sure that they maintain social distancing as what was announced by PM Narendra Modi.
The current outage issue of the EPFO website is unknown. But, the outage may be due to the sudden surge in traffic in the website after the announcement was made and hence the EPFO portal was overloaded.
